Why Supergirl Is Relevant To Everyone

With the recent surge in TV superhero shows, CBS’s Supergirl enters the public’s eye with tough competition. The last time someone portrayed Supergirl was Helen Slater in 1984. The movie itself was a flop. Rotten Tomatoes critics said “Supergirl’s wide-eyed, cheery heroine simply isn’t interesting to watch for an hour and a half.”

But 32 years later, Melissa Benoist revived the role and brought back life into the comic book character. The show intertwines both exciting and heartfelt storylines to portray the life of Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin.

Supergirl earned a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The high ratings can be attributed to the fact the show can capture audiences across all demographics. The show is able to capture audiences who enjoy the mythology of DC Comics as well as audiences who know very little about it.

The show backs away from the complexities of other shows like Game of Thrones and Homeland. Although, it still produces an interesting story line that polished and clean. Supergirl has been deemed as family-friendly, but this is not because it lacks depth. It is an example of television that does not need to use profanity or sex scenes to increase its ratings.

Supergirl its self is a show about hope. Its might be cheesy at times, but it revives the old look of action heroes. Action heroes who have a heart and bring hope to the world. Its cheery characters may not be the dark and depressing Bruce Wayne audiences are used to, but they have just as much importance.

Melissa Benoist, who portrays Supergirl, perfectly fits the role as the bubbly and kind Kara Zor-EL. She is able to portray hope and happiness without making the audience want to gag. Yet Benoist shows Supergirls inner strength that the audience sees grow throughout the season.

It is an openly feminist show that shows women in roles of importance. Calista Flockhart plays the media mogul Cat Grant. Flockhart portrays a confident character who can pull her own weight in a world full of aliens. None of the three female leads are just “love interests”, which is a common theme in superhero shows. They stand alone in their roles and have more depth than previous female leads.

Overall, Supergirl is a worthwhile watch. Its uplifting story can bring a smile to anyone’s face.

You can find all of the Supergirl on CBS streaming apps or live (check local listings).
